For the past few years, I've been working independently as a book designer and formatter, specializing entirely in Canva and Microsoft Word. I started doing this because I love taking someone's raw manuscript or collection of photos and turning it into a polished, beautiful book that they can be proud of. My day-to-day work involves collaborating with self-published authors, course creators, and everyday people who need help bringing their ideas to life. I design everything from text-heavy ebooks and interactive workbooks to highly visual projects like wedding photo books and travel journals. One of the things I'm most proud of in my work is my attention to the technical details. Designing a book isn't just about making it look pretty on a screen; it has to work in the real world. I spend a lot of time ensuring that margins are correct, bleed areas are set up properly, and the typography is easy to read. I've successfully formatted dozens of books specifically for Amazon KDP and other print-on-demand services, so I know exactly what those platforms require to avoid printing errors. I also make it a point to deliver editable Canva templates to my clients whenever possible. I've found that people really appreciate having the freedom to go back in and fix a typo or update a photo later on without having to hire me all over again. Overall, my experience has taught me how to balance creative design with the strict technical requirements of book publishing, all while keeping communication clear and friendly with the people I work with.
