My work in fantasy developmental editing involves helping writers identify weaknesses in their manuscripts, understand their underlying causes, and determine how to strengthen their stories while preserving their creative intentions. Through my editing work, I look beyond surface-level issues to examine the structural decisions and narrative elements shaping a reader's experience. For instance, a fictional world that feels unconvincing may not need more detail. The underlying issue could be unclear worldbuilding rules, character decisions that contradict those rules, or a setting that has little influence on the plot. Similarly, a story that loses momentum may have deeper problems with character motivation, conflict development, or the progression of events. When reviewing a manuscript, I assess plot structure, character development, worldbuilding, internal consistency, pacing, conflict, and narrative logic. I examine how these elements interact, identify where the story loses clarity or momentum, and explain what contributes to the problem. In mystery, I also evaluate clue placement, the logic behind key discoveries, and whether the final solution is adequately supported by the evidence presented throughout the story. My feedback is direct, thoughtful, and practical. I explain why particular issues matter, identify their underlying causes where possible, and suggest ways to address them without imposing my own creative preferences. My goal is to help writers make informed revision decisions, strengthen their narratives, and preserve the distinctive voice and creative vision that make their work their own. My editing work spans fantasy, dark fantasy, science fiction, and mystery, with each assessment tailored to the manuscript's narrative demands, genre conventions, and intended reading experience.
