Header

A PHP consultant is an experienced developer who reviews PHP applications and advises on code quality, security, performance, and modernization. PHP powers a large share of the web, from custom business systems and online stores to content management platforms like WordPress.

A PHP consultant looks at your application as a whole, then helps you decide what to do next: upgrade it, extend it, refactor it, or rewrite parts of it, and in what order.

Businesses usually hire one when an app runs on an old PHP version, when security concerns come up, when performance slows under growing traffic, or when a legacy system built years ago needs new features and nobody is sure how safely the code can be changed.

PHP consultants on Fiverr commonly offer:

1. Code reviews: assessing structure, readability, duplication, and maintainability.
2. Security audits: checking for SQL injection, cross-site scripting, weak authentication, and exposed secrets.
3. Performance reviews: finding slow queries, missing caching, and inefficient code paths.
4. PHP version upgrades: planning moves to supported PHP releases and fixing compatibility issues.
5. Legacy modernization: introducing frameworks, Composer, automated tests, and cleaner architecture step by step.
6. Framework migrations: moving custom code to Laravel or Symfony.
7. API design: reviewing or planning APIs for mobile apps and integrations.

Most consultants can also carry out the recommended changes in a follow-up order.

The right answer depends on the state of your code and your business goals. Upgrading makes sense when the app works well but runs on an older PHP version. Check the official list of supported PHP versions to see whether yours still receives security fixes.

Refactoring is best when the app is valuable but hard to change. Improving structure and adding tests gradually reduces risk without stopping new work.

A rewrite is usually the last resort. It can be the right call when the code is deeply tangled, undocumented, and blocks critical features, but it takes longer and costs more than most teams expect. A PHP consultant can weigh these options with real effort estimates.

A PHP developer builds and maintains features. They write code, fix bugs, and deliver functionality according to a defined scope.

A PHP consultant focuses on assessment and strategy. They evaluate risk, identify root causes of recurring problems, and create a roadmap for improving the application. Their deliverable is often a report or technical plan, sometimes followed by hands-on work.

On Fiverr, many sellers combine both roles. If your app is built on a modern framework like Laravel, Laravel consultants bring framework-specific depth. For WordPress-based sites, experienced WordPress developers are often a better match. A consultant is most valuable before big, hard-to-reverse decisions, such as a rewrite or a platform change.

Based on Fiverr marketplace data, starting prices for PHP consulting and development gigs on this page range from about $80 for focused tasks to $1,000 or more for custom web application builds and larger modernization projects. Experienced PHP consultants who bill hourly commonly charge between $35 and $100 per hour.

Basic packages usually include a short review or a small fix. Standard and Premium tiers can add security audits, upgrade plans, and implementation.

Your budget will depend on:

• Codebase size and age, since older systems take longer to understand
• PHP version gap between your current and target releases
• Framework usage, as custom code without a framework is harder to review
• Security and compliance needs, especially for apps handling payments or personal data

Most PHP consulting projects on Fiverr follow these steps:

1. Discovery call: you describe the application, its users, known issues, and future plans.
2. Access: the consultant receives repository access and, if needed, a copy of the database structure.
3. Code and security review: architecture, dependencies, and vulnerable code patterns are analyzed.
4. Performance profiling: slow pages and queries are measured.
5. Findings and roadmap: you receive prioritized recommendations with effort estimates.
6. Implementation: the consultant carries out upgrades or fixes, often on a staging server first.

A focused review usually takes a few days. Upgrades and modernization projects can run for weeks and are typically handled as milestone orders, so each phase is tested and approved separately.

PHP consultants use a mix of analysis, testing, and upgrade tools:

• Dependency management: Composer for installing and updating packages
• Static analysis: PHPStan and Psalm to catch bugs without running the code
• Automated upgrades: Rector for applying repetitive code changes across versions
• Testing: PHPUnit and Pest for automated tests
• Profiling: Xdebug and Blackfire for finding slow code paths
• Coding standards: PHP_CodeSniffer and PHP-CS-Fixer for consistent style
• Frameworks: Laravel, Symfony, and CodeIgniter

For security reviews, many consultants measure findings against the OWASP Top Ten, a widely used list of the most critical web application risks. Using a recognized standard makes the report easier to share with auditors, clients, or investors.

Common add-ons for PHP consulting gigs include:

• Implementation of fixes after the review
• PHP version upgrade on staging and production servers
• Automated test setup for critical features
• Database optimization and indexing
• Ongoing maintenance on a monthly basis

Hosting upgrades, paid libraries, and server licenses are not included and are paid separately. New feature development is also usually quoted as its own project once the review is complete, so confirm the scope in writing.

Some issues also fall outside a PHP review. Deep database design problems may need database consulting, and connecting your app to other platforms is often handled through API development and integration services.
