The Perfect Design Brief
Here’s how to tell design freelancers exactly what you need
You need design help, and you know where to find the best freelancer for the job (on Fiverr Business, of course).
Now you need to tell that freelancer what you want. But…how?
We searched the web and picked the brains of some of our top design freelancers in order to break down exactly what they need to know to deliver perfect design work.
1. The “What”
First up—what kind of design work do you need? Is it for a logo or presentation? Illustration? Some kind of architecture or interior design? The possibilities are (almost) endless, so the first step is to identify what you want.

Architecture & Interior Design
Presentation Design
Tip for success
No matter your “what”, it’s important to be detail oriented. Instead of simply asking for game art, ask for help designing characters and their props.
2. The “Why”
Ask yourself why. Why do you need this design? Maybe it’s an update for your professional website, an attempt to reach a wider audience, or a project meant to bring awareness to your brand.
The most important part of the brief is explaining the purpose behind your request. This informs your freelancer about your goals and ensures your design accomplishes what you want.
Tip for success
Your design work likely has more than one “why”. Identify every goal you want to achieve, and be as specific as possible. Don’t request a logo design, request a logo design that’s bold and uses symbolism to convey the nature of your business.
3. The “Who”
In order to reach the right people, designers need to know who you’re trying to reach.
The best way to figure that out? Market research. Fortunately, Fiverr Business can help with that too. Whether it’s via surveys, focus groups, or general research, rely on Fiverr Business to identify your ideal demographics. This will help you reach the right consumers and ultimately save you time, money, and resources.

Tip for success
Once you’ve identified your audience, break them down into personas with distinct characteristics for each of your primary consumer types. You can even give them names to help bring them to life. This will be a valuable long-term resource.
4. The “How”
So you’ve identified what you want, why you want it, and who it’s for. Now you need to clarify how you want it done.
Give some background and context on your business. What kind of fonts and colors do you use? What’s your brand’s tone of voice? What are some hard-and-fast rules around how you operate?
Provide examples of previous work that you like (or dislike!) as guidance for your freelancer.
Brand Style Guides
Tip for success
You may not have any brand guidelines yet. That’s ok. Work with a branding expert to help identify your brand’s personality.
5. The “What If”
Let’s fast forward. Your freelancer knocked it out of the park and designed exactly what you wanted. What’s next?

Use your new design work for more. Make that book cover the background of your website homepage. Put your new logo into a package design. Transform your AR filter into a static image to post on social media.
There are so many ways to use your design work. Don’t stop here.
