Built a local AI companion from scratch that runs entirely on consumer hardware with no cloud dependency and no API keys. What it does: — speech input through local Whisper transcription — replies spoken back through a local TTS engine — persistent memory so it remembers past conversations — an animated avatar whose mouth shapes are driven by the actual TTS phonemes, not by volume — a mood system that shifts the tone of replies based on conversation context Technical notes: — Python, Ollama, local model inference — modular design where the brain, voice, ears and avatar are independent, so any one component failing degrades gracefully instead of taking the chat down — designed to run in around 8 GB of VRAM The full source is public on GitHub. I now build the same engine for clients in two forms: cloud-powered bots using OpenAI, Gemini or Claude for speed, and fully local bots for clients whose data cannot leave their own machines.
