SRE / DevOps Engineer • Merck KGaA • Darmstadt, Germany (remote) • Create Kubernetes clusters on AWS EKS from scratch and operate them through their lifecycle, including cluster version upgrades. • Main project: an observability platform – log collection with Vector, streaming through Kafka, storage and search in Elasticsearch, and Grafana dashboards. Administer Grafana and Elasticsearch. • Configure the AWS foundations EKS depends on (VPC and related components) and route cluster traffic through a gateway. • Designed and delivered an automated, self-service process for observability: users upload a YAML file and the entire underlying infrastructure is created automatically. It is used across all internal clusters (around 20) and is platform-agnostic, so on-prem servers and EC2 instances use it as well. • Define infrastructure as code with cdk8s and cdktf in an object-oriented style, complemented by Terraform and Kubernetes operators (Prometheus, Elastic, Kafka). • Write Python scripts and tooling to automate platform tasks, applying object-oriented programming principles. • Design and architect the internal processes and structure of the observability platform. • Secure the platform and its processes: AWS IAM roles, dedicated users for Elasticsearch and Grafana, user permissions managed through Microsoft Entra ID, secrets management with HashiCorp Vault, and Kubernetes cluster roles (RBAC). • Use Azure DevOps for Git repositories and CI/CD pipelines.
