Discourse requires a direct installation via Docker. You will need a standard VPS or Dedicated Server running Ubuntu (20.04/22.04) or Debian. For small forums, a minimum of 2GB RAM is required. Will my users lose their passwords during migration?
Generally, yes. For security reasons, passwords cannot be directly imported. When the new Discourse forum goes live, your users will simply use the "Forgot Password" function with their existing email to set a new password for the updated platform.
What about attachments and images in posts?
Yes, images and attachments that were uploaded directly to your old forum are included in the migration. They will be transferred and relinked automatically within the new Discourse posts.
How long does the migration usually take?
The migration time depends heavily on the size of your database (number of posts/users). While the Basic package specifies 3 days, actual downtime (where posting is disabled to prevent data mismatch) is usually just a few hours on the scheduled day.
Can I migrate from other platforms like SMF or vBulletin?
