FAQ
What genres will you read?
I specialize in literary, contemporary and commercial fiction, as well as mysteries and thrillers. I also enjoy working with science fiction and fantasy. I don't work with romance or horror.
What file formats will you accept?
I prefer MS Word (.doc or .docx) or Google docs so that I can make the occasional comments, which I will then use to write your feedback report. .Pdfs are fine, too, just not as useful.
Can I submit a list of question for you to answer about my book?
Certainly. I will do my best to address all your concerns.
What is the deliverable I will receive?
A feedback report commenting, at a high-level, on how well you have 'built the world' of your novel and developed the characters, plot, structure, pacing, themes, etc. In general, I will discuss how successful your novel is and, if appropriate, give you some tips on how to improve it.
What if I want more help, such as inline comments and a more detailed analysis?
That's called a developmental edit. I also offer that service, for which I provide you with a marked up copy of your manuscript with inline comments, but it takes longer and costs more. Search for me under developmental editing and you'll see what services I provide and how much they cost.
Are you triggered by anything?
Nothing shocks me anymore, language included. I welcome sensitive and controversial issues. I draw the line at gratuitous and unnecessary violence and behavior that doesn't serve the story.
Will you work with LGTBQIA+ characters?
Absolutely. I welcome all characters.
What's your training?
I hold a BA and MA in English from Northern Illinois University, an MFA in Dramatic Writing from Brandeis University and am a 2014 graduate of Grub Street's Novel Incubator program in Boston. I've attended many creative writing conferences, retreats and classes, and belong to a writing group.
