Substitute Teacher
Aug 2013 - Nov 2020 • 7 yrs 3 mos
After retiring from teaching in elementary schools, I substituted in two local high schools for a change of pace. I was a substitute teacher in high demand and, for five years, taught in a wide range of academic areas, including English, math, foreign languages, physical education, computer science, art, business, family and consumer science, social studies, performing arts, vocational education, special education, and visual arts. When the pandemic came, I had to give up substitute teaching to care for my newborn granddaughter, who was born with a congenital heart condition. I soon discovered that students in this age group were a pleasure to work with. They appreciated my sense of humor, and I was pleasantly surprised by their warmth — they gave me hugs, thanked me for being there, and told me I was one of the coolest substitutes at the school. What I found most rewarding was the positive connection I built with the students. Their humor, kindness, hugs, and words of appreciation made me feel welcome and valued, and they reminded me how meaningful it can be to work with young people.

Throughout my teaching career, I taught students from kindergarten through eighth grade, specializing in English and communication arts. In my final years, I also served on the committee that developed the county's communication arts curriculum, giving me firsthand insight into what helps young readers grow. Having taught children ages five to fourteen and read the books they genuinely enjoyed, I know how to match literature to a child's age, interests, and reading level—so I can help authors choose books that truly connect with young readers and stand out to parents, teachers, and buyers.
