A few examples of what can automate:
Automate any process in any app.
Check and send phone location at a specific time or time interval (useful for parents who want to know where their children are).
Auto-respond to a specific incoming SMS by sending its current location.
Toggle Wi-Fi hotspot or Bluetooth at a specific time of day.

Do I need to have the app installed?
Not if your task is in Tasker, because Tasker can generate an .apk app for your macro. If you want your macro in MacroDroid or Automate, you will require these apps to work.
